My problem with this story, beyond the obvious that this is ludicrous, is that the people in charge of these rules failed on two ends. They first wrote a law stating that females can participate with males in a sport that doesn't offer both gender options for participation; yet the geniuses never thought to add the words "and vice versa"? The second problem is that typically sports commissions are built in a way that rules can be interpreted fairly in case what's been written and agreed to was designed for one problem, and not for another. In other words, the spirit of this rule was likely built with the idea that females were being blocked from male dominated sports and that's not fair. The same spirit of that law should apply in this case, just swap out the pronouns.
Cheerleading suffers enough from idiots who don't recognize it as a sport, let's not let ridiculously obvious solutions like this pass us by.

Alert - Holiday Hiatus
I am going to hold off on any new podcasts until the 2nd of January at the earliest. I was attempting to stay on top of them, but the holiday time is just too busy with stuff I like to do.
I'll keep updating the blog with my reactions to stories I've come across. Always feel free to comment on them or any previous posting. Still send your emails and tweets (@JomCBrian), but I likely won't be able to bring them up until I do podcasts on my schedule again.
Until then, I hope everyone is having a good time of year, regardless of your practices.
As always, you'll hear from me soon. I hope to hear from you soon!

Poli Sigh - Hard Headed
Found this via the Washington Times
I have a very simple stance on this issue and it's not an uncommon one as I've seen it repeated many times in many different areas of discussion: either have a stiff helmet law for motorcyles OR if you don't have one have it set up so that any and all medical care for any accidents that happened come from the family of the individual and their insurance program only - no money should come from anybody else.
That said, I realize of course that the real issue is something else entirely, one that would lead to absolutely zero need for things like helmets, seat belts, etc. We only need those things because the vehicles that we've built aren't safe enough (yet, though over time it seems to get better) and the way drivers are forced to work within the rules of the road (driver education, traffic policing, etc.) aren't done well enough. Mind you, I don't have any knowledge on how to improve them. Do you?

K.I.S.S. - Politely disagree
From the Consumerist
It's not so much the article, but the discussion in the comments I find interesting. I tend to say 'Will do!', 'You betcha!', 'Sounds Good', and 'Alrighty' in my work emails a lot. I think we are all intelligent enough to interpret the meanings behind the phrase 'No problem' and recognize it is just 'You're welcom' repackaged.

Totaly Balls - Shoelaces: The Untold Story
Via Yahoo! Sports
I have 3 problems with this 'theory':
1) It came not from any other current, active player; but instead a guy who 'can figure his old coach would suggest something like this'. It would mean more coming from an active player on either team involved in the incident.
2) How many times have we laughed and cringed when hearing players talk about things like purposefully punching each other in the balls, yanking on hair, twisting the head and neck of an opponent, spitting, puking, pissing, biting, farting, etc. Yet the one thing that Suh and Dietrich-Smith wanted to keep from the media is shoelace untieing?
3) This also sounds like a rationalization, but let's follow it through: repeatedly playing the old chestnut prank of untieing someone's shoelaces could reasonably expect cleated foot stomps to the head and face? Now I don't feel so bad about that time I didn't notice the whoopee cushion in my chair and started shooting up the place with my shotgun!

Poli Sigh - Why hasn't this made a list of 'dumb laws'?
Saw this on Deadspin as well
I can understand having a law on the books stating that a trial can proceed without an expert testimony, but a law that says you CAN'T have an expert testify a victimizer or victim's situation and thought process is ludicrous. I wish I knew where to look to figure out what situation sparked this grade A genius piece of legislation.

Totally Balls - I Hurd you had the good stuff!
Via just about every source of sports news (Deadspin link)
Chicago Bears Wide Receiver Sam Hurd was making more than a little extra cash on the side by dealing in cocaine. Do you know what the minimum amount of money you make in the NFL is as a player? Look it up and calculate how many years worth of your salary that would be for just one year in the league. Just not enough for some people - they've just gotta help distribute drugs that can destroy families, end lives, and ignite violence. What a world.

My title is definitely dark humor, but the idea of Sandusky being in the showers with minors to 'teach hygiene' is apalling. By the way, IF the idea were true (and it's not, no need to wait for a trial to figure that one out), then wouldn't profiling troubled kids be a smell test?

Totally Balls - I Suh-pose we shouldn't be surprised
Listen to the call (embedded to site) via Deadspin
I think Suh's head is only filled with football. Clearly logic, sense, and humility are lacking. The worst part? He's wealthy as hell thanks to it. Suh is also the smoking gun that inviolably shows that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell lacks leadership abilities. There's no reason he should be able to play the rest of this season, and instead fans should be whispering when the next incident will happen and thus cause him to be permanently banned from the league. That scenario won't happen because The Goodell appears to be nothing more than a scarecrow; good intentions via appearance - unable to effectively act.
Now that I think about it, scarecrow's have historically been effective. I shouldn't have brought them down to the commish's level.

Saw this on Consumerist
Of course, the Rep. Lee Terry wants kudos for closing a bill push that wasn't looking good; the problem is I would instead give the benefits to all the other congress people who weren't lame enough to try passing this bill.
It's not truly a win for the consumers either way - as a commentor stated: the phone lines are spoofed anyway!

Totally Balls - 4 versions of McQueary testimony
Via Deadspin - who has done a fantastic job of covering the Sandusky issue.
Gotta tell ya, I still buy more into the grand jury testimony of McQueary (who was there at the time) than a second hand story by a doctor that somehow was magically involved when McQueary told his father. Further, what about his father advising to speak to Paterno? I don't know about this Dranov side yet. I should reserve judgment, but I'm definitely leaning to a side.

The FDA has more food being recalled. If you or someone you know has a dog, bring this to their attention to avoid an avoidable tragedy. Funny how these recalls are popping up right after the FDA stated they were going to more deeply inspect food for animals....
K.I.S.S. - Lowe-ly bowing down to pressure
Via Consumerist
I think it is Lowe's right to choose when and where they pay for their advertising to be displayed, but kowtowing to ignorant, racist, and bigotry laden organizations that can barely spell Islam really knocks their company down in my eyes. Seriously people, stop making a boogey-man out of everything that doesn't directly coincide with your lifestyle.

Game On! - Nintendo & GameStop circle strafing together
First caught this on Kotaku!
A lot of people are probably ready to hit this news story hard as GameStop is a company that hasn't done much for its own brand lately, however I can' get past all the stories that seem to have come out this year of Nintendo working out exclusivity deals with other companies. I don't recall this being their way. A complete corporate restructure ongoing?

Game On! - Obsidian-tipped dagger
Saw it first at CVG.
Obsidian CCO hopes that digital sales can kill off used games. Here are his quotes (my reaction in italics):
"Of course, one of the greatest things about digital distribution is what it does to reduce the used game market. I hope digital distribution stabs the used game market in the heart." - Gee, that must be why I'm waiting for MSRPs to drop on titles I want to buy, not seeing them in stores used, and then eventually forgetting about them and never buying them. Brilliant strategy!
"One of the things I enjoyed with Fallout: New Vegas was that digital distribution of the DLC made things more flexible in terms of getting the content done. You didn't have to worry about production times for discs, and so you could take an extra week if you needed that to get things right," - Funny, I love Fallout and decided not to buy New Vegas because all I heard and experienced was an incomplete game. *checks reviews pre- & post-release* Guess I wasn't the only one!

Last Time On - MGS: Rising WAS cancelled

I wish they had kept it cancelled rather than do a spinoff. I want to play Metal Gear Acid, but I never have yet because it's a spinoff that just sits below my radar. I have the feeling the same will happen with Reveangance. How about you?

The Reactioneer 006
This week we cover:
- Updates to the blog/podcast structure
- Touch My Katamari DLC
- Final Fantasy 13-2 save file bonuses
- Changes to Metal Gear Rising
- The announcement of C&C Generals 2
- Ray LaHood defending the Chevy Volt
- Problems with stock location in a retail environment
- Dottie Sandusky and the dream world she seems to be living in
- Colt McCoy concussion
- and more, as usual
Game On! - General's LIVE!!
You'll find this story at just about all the gaming sites, so no link for you. It has been confirmed that the next C&C game will be a General's title. I'll be waiting without baiting my breath, because the trailer says to wait until 2013.
While I wanted the next in the series to be Generals, I find myself unsure of which direction I want the team to take with it.
Should it stick with the tried-and-true formula that we saw with it's predecessor? I think that would be very fitting and easy to get into, but will it generate enough positive views to make sure the title doesn't go the way of a dodo named Age of Empires?
Should it go looser and a bit more over the top ala Red Alert? I say no to this one, because that's exactly what Red Alert is for.
Or should it attempt to be much more serious, such as with Company of Heroes? I don't see EA doing that, especially with this series. However, it's worth looking into seeing as how the original Generals was an exaggerated view of a current world issue.
As I seem to always say - time will tell!

Game On! - Reveangomancing the Stone
Saw Joystiq give some good talk on this.
A new name (Metal Gear Rising: Reveangance), a new developer (Platinum Games) and a new direction for the next Metal Gear title that will feature Raiden's sole story. I was anxiously awaiting this game prior to the change, with concerns that, although I was able to think of plenty that could be done with Cyborg Raiden, it would become too action-y and slash-y. Now I have lost almost all interest in the title. It's not that I'm forecasting an unworthy title; instead it's that it was hard enough to swallow the apparent loss in stealth game play, and now I'm being told that apparently the emotional rollercoaster that was Big Boss, Liquid Snake, Solid Snake, and Revolver Ocelot's story means little. I'd rather Platinum made another Bayonetta or worked with Konami on a fresh title while Kojima's team scrapped the idea of rising.
MG's storyline is seemingly complete, let's not be like those athletes that don't know when it's time to close the locker for good.

Totally Balls - Psyche yourself up with racism
This comes via the Buffalo News
The origin of the chant is hard to identify. The tradition created from it can't be excused as anything but complete ignorance. Speaking of ignorance; who really believes the coaches were unaware of this? How convenient that the school just happened to have a 'private, adult-less moment for the team'.
Can the human race as a whole EVER break free of racism?

NFL Concussions - Why the problem is the league and not the equipment
Read this paragraph from Deadspin:
How many times can the NFL disregard their own rules and not get punished for it?
Brad McCoy went on to question Browns coach Pat Shurmur for saying after the game that Colt was fine. He mentioned that the team's PR staff made certain Colt spoke only briefly with the media because the press conference lights were "killing him." He wondered why Josh Cribbs left the game with a groin injury and never returned, when his woozy son was thrown right back out there with a rattled brain.
According to Florio, Shurmur said today that McCoy's symptoms only became noticeable after the game. Had he known otherwise, Shurmur said, McCoy wouldn't have gone back in.

I read this story last week, and not once in my mind did I think "the Red Cross will be a law enforcer". That has to be a bunch of people joking, otherwise we need to add them to the "Whoops, Darwin missed!" list.

Miyamota (sort of) Retires
Via many different sources, so no link, you've probably seen/heard it.
Not too sound too off-put, but I have to treat this with the same 'meh' that I did with Steve Jobs. These people did great work and are the faces of their respective company's, BUT we all know that the true lifeblood of their industry is the unknowns with the regular wages and the lack of interviewing prospects. Do you guys agree/disagree?

If Ray Ray is "not trying to protect General Motors", then why make the statement during a major investigation prior to any findings? You're either supporting a company in the face of an investigation or not. Make this statement after you've heard preliminary reports, and then things aren't so bad looking.

3 quick reflections this week: Command & Conquer (the original), Warhawk (also the original) and Panzer/Allied General
Business Staffing
This comes via the ever enjoyable read of the Harvard Business Review.
I agree with a lot of what's said, but I have to take an issue with the article. His 'stockout' example at the beginning is important to point out, however the author incorrectly identified the problem. He mentioned that a customer walks in, doesn't see the item they want, and walk out. His solution? Make sure you have the employees on hand to point them in the right direction. I think he misidentified the problem. In my experience, the customer can't find the product because the product is in a bad spot. Replace the customer with an employee; how many times have you seen (or been) an employee who can't find the item you're looking for either for a price check, helping the customer find the item, putting up/taking down sale signage, etc. I blame over reliance on end caps, bulk stacks, and tiny hooks that sit along shelving for this problem, but I don't expect the retail industry to fix this any time soon.

It's Showtime! (Sims 3)
You'll find this announcement all over the gaming press world, so no link for you! The Sims 3 next expansion is going to be Showtime which is based around music, venues, and party/club/concert-going. When I heard this I was a bit disappointed because I'm A) still waiting for a Seasons from Sims 2 equivalent, B) under the impression this is something that should have been in Late Night, C) thinking of all the rumors that it was going to be more interactive in the vein of the sports and game worlds within The Sims, or D) suffering from all of the above.
For the record, I considered not buying this pack for a day, until I spotted the announcement of a new world. Bastards get me every time! How about you?

Earning DLC through play - Katamari
This one comes from CVG.
I disagree with the article in one specific facet:
"The concept of working in a game to unlock paid download content would sound odd in the console world, but iPhone gamers will be more than familiar with this functionality."
I have two problems with that statement. First, factually speaking, you may not be able to call it paid DLC if you can legally acquire it without paying for it above and beyond the price point of obtaining the game. From there, we get to the point that console gamers, pc gamers, etc. are used to very similar model to this: unlocking bonus items/modes/music/whathaveyou via gameplay was long a tradition of many games regardless of genre, because internet access wasn't what it is now.
In fact, I feel that this model does more to harken back to the days of yore in games than it does to further bolster the future path we seem to be on. I would prefer little to no DLC at all in my games, but if it must persist, this is a style I can live with.
As always, sound off!

Command & Conquer Alliances?

C&C is a brand I love, but have been a little iffy on since Generals. Surprisingly, there's a significant response of players HOPING it is a new title for the Generals universe. And here I thought I was the only one. One problem though, considering the flow of things lately, I'm banking partially on this being a Facebook/smartphone title that I'll wind up with little to no interest in. As always, time will tell on these. Your thoughts?
